My heart didn’t break into a thousand pieces after she left. Instead, I realized all the things she didn’t do. She didn’t want to hear my stories. She didn’t ask me questions. She didn’t smile when I was talking to her. She didn’t hug me out of the blue to make me feel good. Her hugs were always a preamble to something else and after she was gone, I wondered if she ever knew me at all.
